LAURA, THE BRIDE

When you think of your parents, it’s hard to wrap around your mind that at one point they had no prior relationship to each other—no significance, no bond, no love. At one point, they weren’t together (in my case, they were in two different countries!). Hard to think about, right? Those what ifs: what if they had gone down a different path? Made a different choice?

My dear cousin, Laura, got married the first of September and my whole family travelled down to visit her (I had not been to wedding since I was around four, so I did not exactly remember the process). Sitting in the church, looking at my cousin walk down the aisle made tears well-up in my eyes. It was just so surreal, you know? I mean, I remember her and her sister playing with makeup in the bathroom and letting me join in even though I had no idea what mascara was. I’ve never had any sisters, so in a way, they were sisters to me. I’ve always looked up to Laura and admired how radiant she is. Calm and composed, even when she feels anything but—Laura elegantly climbs her way towards her ladder of success. Seeing Laura accomplish everything: her school, her job, her marriage—really illustrates that working hard allows you to achieve your goals.

When her sister, Rebecca, mentioned to me that time flies by too fast—I really resonated with that. It was like one day Laura was going off to homecoming to dance with a boy, and now she just had her first dance with her husband. Makes you looks back and see how cool life turns out. If you told me that I would have accomplished all the things I have up till now—I would not believe you. You cannot plan out your life, but you can live it. Things may not work out the way you wanted it to, but life does work out in the way it needs to. I do believe that everything happens for a reason—every choice has a consequence. So, tell me, what will you do today?

"For what it's worth: it's never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you're proud of, and if you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start over." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
