Diversify Your (Photography) Lens

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

Not only should we reconstruct the way we think about the world, but the way we see the world as well. It's important to acknowledge our own limitations within the sphere of our intelligence and knowledge that we acquire through our experiences. What you surround yourself with shapes who you are, so what is it that we see that changes our perceptions? How do the things we look at every day shape how we look at everything we come into contact with?

To get to my point: How can you get anywhere unless you immerse yourself completely in an effort to change your view of the world? You can change your way of thinking, yes...but can you change your way of living in a way that reflects your growing mindset?

One of the big things in my world is art, so I think it's important to immerse myself in creative atmospheres that promote diversity and inclusivity. Photography—as a form of art—is all about sharing your worldview through your eyes. So in order to learn about different perspectives, I believe we must experience these perspectives from different people—therefore, we must diversify our photography lens (and of course, every other lens too).

Below are a couple portraiture photographers that have (*chef's kiss*) remarkable photos and you should definitely follow them to expand the art you look at!!! Literally these photos are breathless.

The lightning in her photos are heavenly and the dynamic poses she puts her subjects in really encompasses the feelings and emotions she puts into her photos. I would like to thank a light stalking of Justin Minh's instagram (Ben and Klaus from The Umbrella Academy are some of my favorite characters, sue me) to find Kim's mystical feed.

Always been a fan of Mack's work. She embeds a sensual and airy quality to her work that makes it so dreamy. She focuses a lot on the female body, but does include men every so often as well!

Lay is a fashion and portraiture photographer that blends neutral and bright colors to make her photos pop with beauty and elegance. The outfits, the models, and the makeup creates the perfect photos omg.

I love how he plays with femininity and masculinity in his photos. Also? The vintage and retro look totally pops.

I love his black and white portraits, but most importantly, I love the long exposure that creates a shaky look or like the images have been repeatedly been stacked upon each other. Like Brydie Mack, he also focuses a lot on skin and the human body.

I think I've been following Kevin Fides for a while and omg seeing how his work has transformed throughout the years blows my mind. He not only has the POWER of creating whimsical and dreamy pictures but pushes beyond one style and creates beautiful photos dipped in different hues with darker undertones to them!!!!! The RANGE.

Feel free to leave any photographers below that promote diversity, inclusivity, and other positive attributes that challenge harmful stereotypes, beliefs, standards, and/or ideologies (I'm looking to follow more photographers that focus on different body types so let me know if you know of any that inspire you so I can follow them!).

xx,

Gabriella
